Introduction to the project
Our course project, Guardian on Wrist, aims to provide a watch-based proactive healthcare solution for the elderly in post pandemic era. Our goal is to design and prototype this product with enough functions that can deal with typical potential health threats in daily life.
The prototyping process is divided into the phrases according to the course arrangement. At the first phrase, or what we called early design stage, we started from the initial idea, obeyed the four step of regular design procedure (Empathize, Interpret, Ideate, Verify) and eventually settled down the main functions and three major using cases. And at the second phrase, or we can call it the prototyping stage, we detailed how the major functions can be implemented and finally made a video prototype of the watch we designed. The detailed execution process will be presented in the following section.
Execution Process of the Whole Project
①Early Design Stage
At the early design stage, we strictly following the regular procedure of product design: Empathize, Interpret, Ideate, Verify. For each step, we have left the picture to show how we think and process:

②Prototyping Stage
At the stage, with the three major functions, health status monitoring, exposure risk monitoring and emergency case dealing, settled down, we designed display features of the watch under different situation and the way user to interact with the watch. All these parts will be listed as follow:
Health Status Monitoring

My Responsibility and Achievement at each phrase
In the early design phrase, as a member, I participated in the needfinding, PoV design and brainstorming. And for the ideation and verification parts, I was in charge of designing the exposure risk monitoring function and made its storyboard.
In the prototyping phrase, I was in charge of designing the family care function and UI for this app. Also, I participated in the video prototyping and record the video of exposure risk monitoring function.
Personal Refection
In CSIT6000N, we’ve learned the methodology to design and prototype product starting with a general idea. The four stages, empathizing, interpretation, ideation and verification, should be restrictly conducted for a completed product design. In the whole design stage, the tools introduced in CSIT6000N, like MindMap, HTA, Storyboard, are essential to expand our thinking and concretize our design. We’ve got a chance to practice all these skills within the first stage in the final project and found them really helpful. For example, in brainstorming stage, we can expand our ideas of watch functions design freely from all direction, and with the help of mindmap, the ideas can be well recorded and organized. Also, by observing the mindmap, we can complete our design without missing any important details.
Also, the gestalt theory and heuristic analysis are also important to help us promote the design. Takes the UI design in our project as an example, the gestalt theory can help me to construct a pleasing health evaluation UI for the app users and the heauristic analysis can help me to systematicly judege whether the interface is well-designed. With these two tools, Not only we can refine the UI in this project but also can we be able to view and build UI in a more reliable and professional way.
